Protesting teachers burn govt’s effigy
Computer teachers in Sangrur have been agitating since September 1, with their protest intensifying on Diwali as they burnt an effigy symbolising the CM Bhagwant Mann-led state government. Their relay fast outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office has now reached Day 62, drawing participation from teachers across various districts, including Hoshiarpur.
These educators, many of whom have dedicated nearly two decades to government schools, are demanding a transfer from the Punjab Information and Communication Technology Education Society (PICTES) to the Punjab Education Department. They are also calling for the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations and a revision of their dearness allowance, which has not been adjusted in three years.
Prominent leaders of the movement, including Jonny Singla, Nardeep Sharma and Navjot Singh, expressed frustration over the government’s indifference to their plight. They highlighted that, tragically, 104 computer teachers have passed away without any financial support being provided to their bereaved families. They are demanding the government offer jobs to the families of the deceased as a form of assistance.
The protestors said if their demands were not addressed soon, they would escalate their actions by organising large rallies against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during the forthcoming by-elections in Barnala, Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak and Chabbewal. They said they aim to hold the state government accountable and raise awareness of their struggles during these events.
