Abohar, August 20

Members of the Technical Service Union (TSU), Mechanical Service Union, Pensioners’ Association and Contractual Employees’ Union today burnt an effigy during a rally outside the Powercom office complex here to protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, demanding the arrest of culprits.

TSU Secretary Jarnail Singh said the government raised slogans of ‘Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao’ and talked about giving equal rights to women. However, after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the administration and government tried to make it appear as a case of suicide, he said.

He said the family members of the deceased doctor were not even allowed to see her for three hours and efforts were made to destroy the evidence. It clearly showed that the government’s claims towards women were hollow, he said. TSU leader said the accused should be given death penalty and appropriate action should be taken against the officers who had allegedly destroyed the evidence and did not act.

Other trade union leaders Kulwant Singh, Jagtar Singh, Sukhwant Singh, Jatinder Kumar, Shankar Das, Sukhjinder Singh and Suresh Singh also addressed the rally.
