Process to shift 293 students from Pathankot medical college begins
The Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) on Wednesday started the process to shift all 293 MBBS students of Chintpurni Medical College (CMC), Pathankot, to other medical institutes in the state.
As per the state government directions, the university has invited these second and third year MBBS students to give their preference from among the eight medical colleges in the state for shifting, according to BFUHS Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajeev Sood.
All students enrolled for academic sessions 2021-22 (143 students) and 2022-23 (250 students) were demanding to be shifted to other recognised, affiliated and approved medical colleges within the state. They were arguing that the CMC failed to provide basic infrastructure in terms of building, clinical material and teaching faculty to them.
Some time ago, these students had staged a protest in front of the BFUHS, demanding their shifting. Since its inception in 2011, Chintpurni Medical College has been courting controversies. In May, 2023, the BFUHS temporarily withdrew its affiliation 2023-2024 after it noticed deficiencies during a surprise inspection. The college was not allowed to admit students to the MBBS course last year as it had failed to comply with various provisions governing affiliation.
In December 2017, 249 MBBS students of 2014 and 2016 batches were shifted to eight medical colleges in the state as per the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
146 to move to govt colleges
Of the total 293 students, 146 will be shifted to four government medical colleges in the state, while 147 will be moved to four private medical institutes. Management quota seats will be allocated to 109 of these students.
