Ludhiana, August 27

After getting over 85 per cent of the total land acquired for its flagship project, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has put the construction of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway in Punjab on fast track.

Projects on table for discussion

  • The projects that will be discussed at the PRAGATI meeting scheduled to be chaired by the Prime Minister in New Delhi on Wednesday are the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway, four-lane Villupuram-Nagapattinam Corridor (Package 1 to 4), Ranchi-Wyndhamganj Corridor (all packages), Delhi-Dehradun expressway, and four-lane Sant Tukaram Palakhi Marg (NH-965G) (Package 1 to 3).

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviews the progress of NHAI projects, especially this multi-state Greenfield Corridor, in Punjab and some other states on Wednesday, the NHAI has built over 95 per cent of one of the seven packages of the Rs 39,000 crore expressway passing through the state.

Following three districts giving full land and five other districts pulling all stops to clear the hurdles, the construction activity on the 295.51-km stretch passing through Punjab has taken off in full swing.

The NHAI has achieved over 55 per cent progress in the construction of expressway in Punjab. The development assumes significance as several highway projects, including parts of the expressway, had been stalled for the some time following the farmers’ protest against land acquisition in the state.

Taking cognisance of the matter, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had reviewed the progress of the NHAI projects in Punjab on July 15 before shooting off a strongly-worded letter to the Chief Minister on August 9.

Rising to the occasion, CM Bhagwant Mann had assured Gadkari that his government was committed to supporting NHAI in its endeavours and “we look forward to working closely for the progress of the country and the state”. Chief Secretary Anurag Verma will lead a team of senior officers from Punjab at the PM’s meeting tomorrow.
