The mode code of conduct has been imposed in the district in view of the by-election to the Barnala Assembly constituency, which is slated for November 13.

The seat had fallen vacant following the election of then Barnala MLA Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer as MP from the Sangrur Parliamentary constituency.

District Election officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Punamdeep Kaur said till May 14, there were 1,80,724 voters, including 95,578 males and 85,146 females, in the Assembly constituency. She added that there were 1,415 PwD (persons with disability) voters, including 894 males and 521 females, and three NRI voters. As many as 3,484 voters, including 2,194 males and 1,290 females, would vote for the first time and fall in the age group of 18-19 years. Besides, 1,300 voters (627 male and 673 females) were above 85 years of age, she added.

As the schedule issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the election notification would be issued on October 18. The last date of filing of nomination papers would be October 25 and scrutiny of the nominations would be held on October 28. The nomination papers could be withdrawn by October 30.

While the polling would take place on November 13, the counting of votes would be held on November 23. As many as 212 polling stations will be set up at 84 locations in the constituency.

SSP Sandeep Malik said all security arrangements were in place to conduct the by-election in a smooth and transparent manner.
