Amritsar, January 16

The officiating chairman of the Punjab Human Rights Organisation (NGO) has sent a letter to Gurmail Kaur, wife of former Akal Takht Jathedar Gurdev Singh Kaunke, and the Jathedar of Akal Takht, pointing out some flaws in the formal complaint prepared by the SGPC’s legal panel regarding the investigation of the Kaunke’s mysterious disappearance case.

In the police report, Kaunke was said to be absconding from the police custody during early 90s. The investigation report by then investigating officer and ADGP BP Tiwari was made public by the PHRO recently and was handed over to Akal Takht as well.

The Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh had ordered the SGPC to investigate and proceed for legal battle in the case.

The complaint, under the signatures of Gurmail Kaur was submitted with the Jagaro Sadar police station in which she sought an FIR against those police officials who were responsible for disappearance of her husband.

PHRO activist Sarabjit Singh said, “On January 13, the application was prepared by the SGPC’s legal panel which was submitted with the police on January 15. Later, it was discovered that there were some flaws in the application which ought to be removed, as this could help the accused having advantage during the case trial. The names of many officers who were the key conspirators in Kaunke’s disappearance, were omitted in the complaint.”
