34-year-old Charanjit Singh died by suicide in Kathgarh, Nawanshahr, on Saturday. He reportedly consumed sulphas tablets. Before taking this extreme step, Singh recorded a video and also put up on social media.

In his complaint to the police, his father, Madan Lal, said his son, who was married to a woman from Phagwara six years ago, was not happy as he was being tortured by the in-laws. The deceased had a five-year-old son.

"His in-laws used to beat him. My daughter-in-law was not living with my son for the last two months. On October 11, when he went to her home to take her, his in-laws thrashed him. This left him heartbroken. We never expected he would take this extreme step," said Madan.

It was only after watching his status that the family got to know that their son had consumed poisonous substances. "When we reached his house, he was struggling for his life and died on the way to the hospital," he added.

A case under Section 108 of the BNS has been registered against three persons, including his wife and in-laws.
