Medical experts call for awareness campaign on health issues
During a seminar hosted by the Rotary Club of Ahmedgarh, medical experts from various fields urged office bearers and activists of medical, educational, and social organisations to launch an awareness campaign highlighting the causes and consequences of numerous health conditions, as well as the rising costs of healthcare.
The appeal was made following the medical check-up camps organised by Global Heart and Super Specialty Hospital Ludhiana in rural and suburban areas of Malerkotla, where approximately 500 patients were examined on Sunday.
Chief cardiologist Dr Brajesh Badhan, expressed concern over the growing prevalence of diseases such as diabetes, gastroenteritis, heart conditions, kidney disorders and skeletal issues, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr Badhan attributed the surge in these ailments to a widespread change in lifestyle, particularly unhealthy eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle.
“People fail to realize that these disorders are directly linked to changes in their lifestyle,” Dr Badhan said, emphasising the need for greater awareness about the early signs of various diseases, including heart attacks and strokes.
He also stressed the importance of learning life-saving techniques such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Dr Badhan highlighted that while conditions like gastroenteritis, kidney issues and skeletal diseases were easier to manage, heart attack victims required immediate, professional medical intervention.
He noted that 70-80% of heart attacks occurr at home, at work, or in public spaces, and the chances of survival are significantly higher if medical help is provided without delay.
Other specialists, including Dr KK Karkara (medicine), Dr Amtoj Singh Khara (orthopedics) and Dr PM Sohal (nephrology), also spoke about the consequences of neglecting the early symptoms of various diseases in their respective fields.
The seminar emphasised the critical need for early detection, timely intervention, and public education to combat the rising health challenges in the region.
