As Sahib Singh becomes the first Sikh child model for Burberry, Indians across the world hail diversity in fashion
British luxury brand Burberry is winning people’s hearts with its latest Autumn-Winter ‘22 collection for children by celebrating diversity in fashion. In a first for the brand, Burberry has featured its first Sikh child model, Sahib Singh.
Just four-years-old, Sahib Singh, is photographed dressed in a Burberry cardigan with a pair of sneakers and a matching black turban, known traditionally as a patka. As reads Sahib’s Instagram bio, ‘Just a boy with a patka (put-kah)’, wherein it is also mentioned that patka is a headgear worn by Sikh boys.
Happy family
“Sahib had an incredible day with the Burberry team, who really looked after all the children they were shooting with. To see our son, who does look different from his peers, being given a chance by the iconic British brand was truly a milestone moment,” says Harjot Kaur, his mother. Posing for the camera in the cardigan and shorts, Singh’s back-to-school look is complete with a Thomas Burberry Bear puffer jacket. The campaign and photographs went live on Burberry’s Instagram handle on Wednesday evening.
On her kid breaking the net with people across the world sharing this proud moment for the family and Sikh community, Harjot wrote, “The joy and pride I felt at the shoot was overwhelming. I couldn’t hold back the tears seeing Sahib recognised by this iconic brand. So grateful to them for pushing boundaries and always producing the best work.”
Many celebs and influencers have hailed this diversity in fashion move by the popular brand by re-sharing it in their instagram stories. @Sikhexpo was quick to comment on Burberry official handle, ‘Young King!’
Matter of identity
Says Aman Singh Virk, model and actor, “I think the world is getting informed that turban or patka is not just a ‘cloth’, but an identity of our religion. In the past, Nike did a campaign which was inclusive of Sikhs, as it featured a boy with a turban, but Burberry has helped in bringing about more awareness.”
