Claiming to have drawn consensus from a large group of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee members, the Shiromani Akali Dal Sudhar Lehar on Friday announced the name of Jagir Kaur as its candidate for the post of SGPC president. SGPC office-bearers are to be elected at the general house meeting scheduled to be held at Teja Singh Samundri Hall in Amritsar October 28.

The announcement was made by Shiromani Akali Dal Sudhar Lehar leaders, including convener Gurpartap Singh Wadala, ex-MP Prem Singh Chandumajra and other leaders at a media interaction here. The leaders held a meeting and shared a copy of the resolution that stated that they were working to free Sri Akal Takht Sahib from political constraints, especially one family.

They appealed to the SGPC members to vote freely as per their will. The members also hailed the Akal Takht decision to stand in favour of Giani Harpreet Singh, Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib, which made SGPC chief refuse to accept his resignation. They termed it a victory of the Sikh Panth.

Jagir Kaur thanked the leaders who supported her candidature. Listing out her agenda, she said, “If I get the mandate, I shall strive to revive the SGPC as the supreme Sikh organisation. I shall work to promote Sikhism far and wide. The SGPC shall work to ensure that everyone gets primary education and health facilities. The booking of sarais or resting places for pilgrims shall be made more transparent.”
