IGP Cheema, 3 others get 8-month jail term
A CBI court today sentenced Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gautam Cheema and three others for eight months for obstructing a public servant under Section 225 and 186 of the Indian Penal Code in a case related to kidnapping of a proclaimed offender Sumedh Gulati in 2014.
Indian Defence Estates Service personnel Ajay Chaudhary, advocate Varun Utreja and Vicky Verma were also sentenced for eight months.
The court also granted bail to Cheema and others today. Defence counsel Terminder Singh said they would appeal in the higher court.
Cheema and others were acquitted for charges of kidnapping, criminal intimidation and hurt in the case.
CBI counsel Lisa Grover had contended that Gulati, a co-accused with realtor couple Devinder Gill-Kricpy Khera in a 2014 fraud case, was forcibly taken away by Cheema from the Phase-1 police station to a private hospital where Khera was admitted on the night of August 26, 2014.
Realtors Devinder Singh Gill and his wife Kricpy Khera had alleged that Cheema got false cases registered against them after a dispute over sharing of profit in joint property business.
