Heavy rain causes breaches along 4 Abohar canals, crops inundated

Hundreds of acres of land got submerged after water overflowed in the canals of four villages of Abohar due to heavy rain, causing erosion.

According to information, there was an erosion of about 80 feet in the canal in Kallarkhera village at around 2am, due to which hundreds of acres of land was flooded and paddy and rice crops got submerged. Farmers gathered today and expressed their anger. They said that this canal had a breach even a month ago but the authorities did pay attention to prevent reoccurrence.

In Malukpura minor (sub canal) in Dalmir Khera, crops got submerged due to erosion after rain. Farmers Pargat Singh, Balkaur Singh, Bharat Bhadu and Harvinder Singh said that this sub canal has not been cleaned for a long time, leading to erosion. There was a 30-feet wide breach yesterday as well.

In Ramsara minor near Shergarh village and Lambi minor near Sherewala, crops got submerged due to another erosion. Rajinder Singh and other farmers said most of the farmers, ahead of rain, close the outlets of the canals near their fields, due to which these overflow and breach, this makes other farmers bear the brunt.

SDO Jaswinder Singh Virk said heavy rain suddenly hit Abohar sub-division area yesterday. Due to overflowing of canals, there have been breaches. He said some farmers closed the outlets of the canals near their fields in rainy season, leading to breaches, now the department will take appropriate action against them. Efforts to plug the breaches have been initiated.
