Shifting focus on prevention, the School Education Department will launch a special campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and promote a drug-free lifestyle among students, teachers and parents.

On October 18, a mega parent-teacher meeting (PTM) will be held at all government schools in the state in which students, parents and members of the school management committees (SMCs) will participate. They will be shown audio-visual slides prepared by the Police Department on drug abuse.

In a letter written to the Director, State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), and all District Education Officers (DEOs) by the Secretary, School Education Department, Kamal Kishore Yadav, the schools have been asked to organise awareness programmes in the second and third week of October. The SCERT Director has been nominated as a state nodal officer to supervise the campaign.

During this period, the schools have been asked to hold various programmes and invite social activists and intellectuals to address students and tell them about drug abuse. The presentations and lectures will focus on the causes, effects and prevention strategies related to substance abuse.

“The schools can play an important role in imparting knowledge and educating students about the adverse consequences of drug use,” said a senior police functionary.
