Senior BJP leader and former minister Gurjant Singh Brar (91) was cremated with honours at his native village Chak 5-LNP near Sriganganagar this afternoon.

The four-time legislator died last evening. His grandson Gurveer Singh Brar is the BJP MLA from Sadulshehar.

A large number of BJP leaders, former and sitting MPs and MLAs, Zila Parishad directors and heads and directors of panchayat committees were among those present on the occasion. Thousands of people bid farewell to the departed leader who had emerged as BJP’s prominent Sikh face in Rajasthan.

In a message, Union Minister Arjun Meghwal said the region lost a tall leader who broadly served farmers besides strengthening the BJP.

Brar had some time ago said he was inducted as minister by then Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on the recommendation of former Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal.

Among those who bid adieu to Brar were former MP Nihal Chand, MLAs Ravinder Singh Bhati and Rupinder Singh Kunnar “Ruby”, former CPM MLA Hetram Beniwal, district Congress president Ankur Miglani, district BJP president Sharanpal Singh, vice-president Ratan Ganeshgarhia, Abohar MLA Sandeep Jakhar, former Punjab minister Surjit Jyani, Rajasthan Mati Art Board Chairman Prahlad Rai Tak, former Congress MLA from Sadulshehar Jagdish Chander Jangid and former BJP MLA from Suratgarh Ashok Nagpal.
