Effigies of drugs, demons go up in flames in Malerkotla
Dasehra was celebrated with a difference in this region of Malwa.
Enthusiasts led by office-bearers of various social, educational and government organisations burnt effigies of drugs, which were installed along with effigies of Ravan, Meghnad and Kumbhkaran with an intent to wean youth away from its abuse.
Initially launched by office-bearers of Rotary District 3090, comprising parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, the coordinated movement launched against the menace of drug abuse was joined by a number of other social and educational organisations.
Amjad Ali, chief adviser, Rotary District, said workshops, seminars and exhibitions were organised during a special campaign launched against drug abuse.
Senior police personnel led by SSP Gagan Ajit Singh had installed effigies of drugs at various venues and these were consigned to flames today as a symbol of continuance of fight against drug addiction.
Rotary district governor Sandeep Chauhan appreciated that office-bearers of more than 100 units of Rotary Club had come forward to spread awareness about the causes and consequences of drug abuse in the run-up to Dasehra.
“Enthusiasts also organised declamation contests, seminars and exhibitions of charts and banners on the subject at various places,” said Chauhan.
Meanwhile, festive fervour prevailed in Malerkotla, Amargarh and Ahmedgarh as residents celebrated Dasehra.
