Downpour waterlogs five villages in Abohar
Five villages of the Abohar area — Patti Billa, Dalmir Khera, Sappanwali, Gidderanwali and Daulatpura — have been dealing with the problem of waterlogging. MLA Sandeep Jakhar, along with various farmers of the area, met Fazilka Deputy Commissioner Amarpreet Kaur Sandhu to seek a solution to this problem.
The delegation submitted a memorandum and demanded that the villages be declared as waterlogging-affected areas and the farmers should be compensated for the losses they have incurred.
Jakhar said after the monsoon, in some areas of these villages the underground water has come to the surface by about 2-4 feet while farmers had developed Kinnow orchards or sown cotton.
He said many villages of Abohar were affected by waterlogging; however, the situation was extremely serious in Patti Billa, Dalmir Khera, Sappanwali, Gidderanwali and Daulatpura villages. He said each of these villages has 2,000 to 2,500 acres of agricultural land, where farmers cultivate cotton and kinnow, adding that this time they had tried to cultivate too; however, due to the waterlogging problem, their crop was ruined.
The DC has called a meeting of officials of the drainage, irrigation, land conservation, and agriculture departments, and she assured the delegation of relief from the problem as soon as possible.
