The farmers staging a protest on the Punjab-Haryana border will now proceed to Delhi on December 14, said farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher on Tuesday.

A ‘jatha’ (group) comprising 101 farmers would proceed to Delhi on December 14 and ‘Prathna Divas’ would be observed on December 11, he said.

He lamented the fact that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not utter a word about farmers during his recent visit to Haryana.

Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Sandhwan, who was visiting Patiala on Tuesday, also came out in support of the protesting farmers and slammed the Centre and PM Modi for not addressing the farmers’ issues.

He said the government should engage in talks with farmers immediately, considering the deteriorating condition of their leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal.

Earlier, in the morning, the farmers carried out a cleanliness drive at the protest site at Shambhu, which saw action on December 6 and December 8 after paramilitary forces and Haryana Police foiled their attempts to move to Delhi.

Over two dozen farmers were injured in the two attempts as security personnel lobbed tear gas shells at them.

Meanwhile, Dr Swaiman Singh, one of the faces of the 2020 farmers’ protest, has come out in support of farm leader Dallewal, who has been sitting on fast-unto-death for the past 15 days.

Dr Swaiman, who is a practising cardiologist in the US, has sought support from the NRI community for the ongoing farmers’ protest.
