Abohar, July 2

Wheat distribution under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKY) was suspended today after the depot holder at Dhani Kadaka Singh village was attacked with sharp-edged weapons on Friday night.

Security sought

There are no security arrangements for us. Unless security is ensured and action taken against the attackers, the depot holders across the district will not distribute wheat. — Vinod Doodi, President, District Depot Holders’ Association

The miscreants allegedly snatched the machine from Sonu, the depot holder. The machined had been provided by the state government to record wheat distribution. The machine was today found broken in the nearby fields.

The incident angered the depot holders across the district who have decided to boycott work. They said they would not resume distribution work until their security was ensured and action taken against the accused.

The incident occurred when Sonu was issuing slips to the eligible beneficiaries at the gurdwara of Dhani Kadaka Singh. One Deepu insisted for out-of-turn favour that was refused, he left after threatening Sonu, it is alleged.

Sonu claimed when he was going home at 10 pm, Deepu and others attacked him. When locals Raju and Raj Singh tried to rescue him, the attackers also shoved them. Sonu, who has got stitches on his head has been admitted to the Government Hospital. As soon as the depot holders came to know about the incident, they gathered at the hospital.

District Depot Holders’ Association president Vinod Doodi said beneficiaries become impatient and quarrel with the depot holders due to faulty systems. “There are no security arrangements for us. Unless security is ensured, the depot holders across the district will not distribute wheat,” he announced.

No case has been registered so far as cops are waiting for the medico-legal report.
