Malerkotla, August 7
The police carried out a search operation at Malerkotla sub jail ahead of August 15.
Though nothing objectionable was found from inmates, the jail staff were asked to stay alert.
Cops led by SP (H) Swaranjit Kaur searched for cellphones, chargers and contraband in an early morning raid.
Malerkotla SSP Gagan Ajit Singh said around 100 cops carried out an intensive search operation with an intent to prevent any illegal activity that could potentially disrupt the smooth preparation and celebration of the Independence Day event.
“We conducted this operation to rule out any possibility of inmates orchestrating crime from their cells,” the SSP said.
Along with searching barracks and belongings of 300 inmates, area along the boundary wall was also searched for prohibited items, he said.
