Congress meet to finalise nominees tomorrow
The Punjab Congress has called a crucial meeting of senior party leaders on October 18 to decide on candidates for the November 13 bypoll to the Gidderbaha, Barnala, Chabbewal and Dera Baba Nanak Assembly segments.
A senior party functionary said Punjab affairs in-charge Devender Yadav would be chairing the meet, which will be attended by PPCC chief Amrinder Raja Warring and CLP leader PS Bajwa. After shortlisting the candidates, the leaders would be meeting AICC general secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal to finalise the names. “As the last date for nominations is October 25, candidates are expected to be finalised by October 21,” said the functionary.
As per internal discussions and surveys, Amrita Singh, wife of MP Amrinder Raja Warring, is learnt to be frontrunner for defending the seat and the second option could be Narinder Kaoni, former Gidderbaha ZP chairman.
For Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Randhawa’s spouse Jatinder Kaur has emerged as the frontrunner for the party ticket. In Barnala, Sangrur ex-MLA Vijay Inder Singla and Sangrur in-charge KS Dhillon are among the probables.
