CM okays Rs 176-cr project to protect Army, BSF outposts against floods
To strengthen security along the International Border with Pakistan, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday cleared flood protection measures to protect border posts of the Army and the BSF at a cost of Rs 176 crore.
In a joint exercise with Army and BSF, the Water Resources Department had identified 28 sites in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Pathankot and Gurdaspur districts along the border.
Chairing a meeting of the State Flood Control Board in that regard, the CM said the government had been repeatedly getting requests from the BSF and the Army to protect border outposts along the International Border against floodwaters of the Ravi and the Sutlej.
The flood-protection measures at these sites would benefit 8,695.27 hectare land. Out of 28 sites, seven are in Ferozepur, 11 in Amritsar, three in Tarn Taran, five in Gurdaspur and two in Pathankot district.
As part of the project, 1,788 feet embankment is proposed to be strengthened in Tarn Taran, 1,050 feet in Ferozepur and 2,875 feet in Gurdaspur. The project would include 29,140 feet revetment, 22 spurs and 95 studs. The CM accorded approval after clearance from the Union Home Ministry, National Disaster Management Authority and the Central Water Commission.
