The police remand of Narain Singh Chaura, who allegedly opened fire on former Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal on December 4 at the entrance of Golden Temple, has been extended by three days.

Chaura was produced in Amritsar court after the culmination of his remand today. After the intervention of court, the police procured CCTV footage of Chaura’s movement in the Golden Temple complex from December 2 to 4.

“It is ironic that SAD leaders, who have been alleging leniency of the police, have been giving political colour unnecessarily whereas the investigation is going on in a very transparent manner. The Akalis had taken into their possession all the CCTV footage to substantiate their allegations showing Chaura walking in and around the Golden Temple premises during the incident and even two days prior to it with some unidentified persons. But the same CCTV footage was not being given to us for investigation,” ACP Jaspal Singh said.

It is learnt that the police were also tracing Chaura’s activities on the border in the recent past through the mobile phones recovered from his possession. Sources said that his location on December 1 was identified to be in Khem Karan border belt.

Meanwhile, the police are also on the lookout for one Dharam Singh, a resident of Ekalgadda Khurd village in Tarn Taran district. Dharam is said to be a close associate of Chaura. Another suspect Jasbir Jassa, a native of Mandiala village in Tarn Taran district, has been rounded up for questioning.
