Punjab boxers team up to train young guns
In just four months since its inception, the “Knockout Boxing and Fitness School” in Jalandhar, founded by national-level boxer Honey Chauhan, has already made a mark by winning six medals at the Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan. The academy’s students brought home three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal in the under-14 and under-21 categories, showcasing their potential and dedication.
The academy currently trains 20 students, including girls, under the mentorship of Chauhan and Rishi Sharma, another boxing enthusiast who has supported the initiative. The school operates out of Victor Model School in Jalandhar Cantt, providing students with access to essential boxing equipment, with plans to add a boxing ring soon.
Chauhan, who has been boxing for 22 years and has represented India in numerous international tournaments, is determined to nurture young talent in Jalandhar. “I wanted to teach them young,” Chauhan said in an interview with The Tribune. His vision is to build a team capable of winning Olympic gold for India. Reflecting on the academy’s early success, he proudly noted: “Our students will now compete at the state level. I couldn’t be prouder.”
Among the academy’s standout performers is Rishi Sharma’s own son, Yuvraj Sharma, who won a gold medal in the tournament, while his younger sibling earned a silver. Rishi, who pursued boxing at the university level, has played a pivotal role in helping Chauhan realise his dream of creating a world-class boxing space for local students.
Honey Chauhan added: “Months ago, I began discussions with school principals to find space, and was fortunate to receive support from key academicians. We’ve created a solid foundation, and now our focus is on bigger competitions.”
With a strong start and a promising group of young athletes, the Knockout Boxing and Fitness School is rapidly gaining recognition. Both Chauhan and Sharma are committed to their mission of cultivating champions, with their ultimate goal set on securing a gold medal for India in the Olympics.
