- No one noticed the body for around three weeks
The body had been reportedly hanging for the past 22 days on the outskirts of the village along the Sidhwan Canal. Ironically, neither the police nor any villager noticed the body hanging from the tree for almost three weeks.
According to information, Dhiraj, who was scheduled to marry on December 10, allegedly died by suicide. He and his brother Prem Kumar lived at Shimlapuri and worked as painters.
On October 5, Dhiraj left home for work but never came back. Later, his family lodged a missing complaint at the Miller Ganj police post.
On October 27, schoolchildren saw the body hanging from the tree and informed the villagers who then called the Sahnewal police.
Gagandeep Singh, sarpanch, Bramanmajra village, said after some students raised an alarm on seeing the body, he along with other villagers reached the spot.
“The body was hanging from the tree in the area, which falls under the Forest Department. I climbed the tree to bring down the body, which had turned into a skeleton. The neck was tied with a long piece of cloth. We couldn’t even guess whether the deceased was a male or a female,” said Gagandeep.
Sub-Inspector Sunil Kumar, in-charge, Miller Ganj police post, said cops found a mobile phone from the pocket of the deceased, which enabled them to trace his family.
The SI said preliminary probe suggested that it was a suicide case and inquest proceedings had been initiated accordingly. Even deceased’s family didn’t raise suspicion on anyone, he said.
“Viscera samples of the deceased have been sent for forensic examination. If the report signals murder, we will divert the probe in that direction,” added the SI.
Prem said his family was still not able to digest why Dhiraj committed suicide.
Meanwhile, the villagers alleged that the Sahnewal police hardly patrolled on the stretch where the body was found. They claimed that addicts openly consume drugs in the area.
