The law and order situation in Punjab has come under sharp criticism from BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh, who has described the recent panchayat elections as a manifestation of “total collapse” in governance under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Chugh condemned the use of intimidation and violence during the elections, characterising it as an assault on democratic principles.

“Gangsters are roaming free during the elections, intimidating candidates and undermining the electoral process. This is not just a failure of law enforcement. It is a direct attack on democracy,” Chugh said. He cited an incident in Faridkot’s Behbal Khurd village, where anti-social elements prevented candidates from filing nominations. “Instead of maintaining law and order, the AAP leadership has turned to thugs to suppress the Opposition,” he said.

In response to the mounting incidents of electoral violence and harassment, Chugh has called for immediate action from the state Election Commission. He demanded a thorough investigation into the incidents surrounding the panchayat elections, particularly in Faridkot. “Those responsible for undermining democracy must be held accountable,” he urged.
