The presidents of various District Bar Associations (DBAs) in the state have opposed the government notification on setting up Gram Nyayalayas in seven districts.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, they termed it as a mockery of the legal system as it was being done without consulting lawyers. AS Dharni, president of the local DBA, said the Chief Justice assured that no Gram Nyayalaya would be opened without infrastructure and consulting lawyers.

In a press release, Dharni said that government had issued a notification to establish Gram Nyayalayas in seven districts without proper consultation with lawyers and it would lead to significant challenges for both legal professionals and justice-seekers. It would not alleviate problems faced by people but rather create one, he said.
