Ludhiana, July 14
The court of Judicial Magistrate Harsimranjit Kaur today extended the police remand of Lok Insaaf Party chief and former MLA Simarjit Singh Bains by two days in the rape case of a 44-year-old woman. He is in police remand since July 11.
The police remand was also extended by two days in the case of four other accused Paramjit Singh Pamma, Baljinder Kaur, Jasbir Kaur, alias Bhabhi, and Pardeep Kumar, aka Gogi Sharma.
To avoid a possible gathering of Bains’ supporters, the police produced him before a court around 10 am. Joint Commissioner of Police (Rural) Ravcharan Singh Brar, along with a team of police officers, was present on the spot to avoid any untoward incident by supporters of the former MLA.
Special Public Prosecutor Balwinder Singh sought the police remand of all accused on the plea that the accused were not cooperating. It has transpired that the prime accused was using different phones to chat and interact with the woman. So, those mobile phones were required to be recovered.
Voice sample of accused Simarjit Singh Bains were required to be taken at the FSL, Mohali. The victim and her family were intimidated telephonically and in person by several persons. Their connection with the accused is yet to be verified. The victim and her family faced several criminal complaints and cases in different states. After giving a plaint, the complainants were not traceable. Only the accused knows the whereabouts of those persons and he may be required to be taken to those places. So, the police remand was required for a proper investigation into the case.
The victim’s lawyer alleged that the former MLA got several false FIRs registered against her.
However, the defence lawyer termed it a false story.
The FIR was registered against him following orders from a local court in July 2021. The chargesheet was filed before the court in December 2021. At that time, none of the accused was arrested.
On November 16, 2020, the woman had moved a handwritten application to the Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, for the registration of an FIR. She sat on dharna outside the office of the Commissioner of Police, seeking the arrest of the accused.
