Khanna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ashwini Gotyal has bagged the Union Home Minister’s excellence award, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced on Friday.

A 2016-batch Punjab cadre woman Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Gotyal is the only police officer from Punjab among 463 cops from across the country awarded the Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak-2024 for the exceptional work in the fields of investigation, special operations and forensic science.

A native of Karnataka, who cracked the UPSC exam in 2016 by securing the 625th rank, has been feted for her commendable job in the field of investigation.

She has been honoured for cracking the case of a targeted attack on Shiv Sena leader Rajiv Mahajan, his son Manav Mahajan and brother Anil Mahajan in Batala in June 2023. As the Batala SSP, Gotyal had cracked the case with the arrest of both shooters, Jashanpreet Singh of Tarn Taran and Dalbir Singh of Amritsar, within a fortnight.

“The Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) had taken the responsibility for the shootout and attributed that to revenge for the killing of India’s wanted terrorist Hardeep Nijjer in Canada on June 18, 2023,” Gotyal told The Tribune.
