Chandigarh, July 9

Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu said that some forces are creating pressure on Balwinder Kaur, the mother of jailed Khalistani separatist and Lok Sabha MP Amritpal Singh from Khadoor Sahib for her ‘not a Khalistani supporter’ remark.

Addressing media, Bittu said, “After becoming a Member of Parliament, he took an oath of the constitution of India.mHe has taken an oath in the name of the constitution and now he will work for the welfare of the nation and Punjab. ‘Usse kisi Khalistan ka bhala thodi unhonein karna hai, ya Khalistan ki thodi baat karni hai’. There is pressure being created on the family by some forces. His mother said a very good thing and we should support her… People voted for him according to the constitution and he also took an oath in the name of the Constitution of India.”

On July 5, Balwinder Kaur said, “He (Amritpal) is not a Khalistani supporter. Does speaking about Punjab, saving the youth of Punjab make him a Khalistani supporter? He contested the election within the ambit of the Constitution and now he should not be called (a Khalistani supporter). He has taken an oath of the Constitution of India.”

Earlier, the Khadoor Sahib MP expressed his resentment over his mother’s statement and said dreaming of a Khalsa state is not a crime; it is a matter of pride.

In a post on X, Amritpal wrote in Punjabi, “Today, when I came to know about the statement made by Mataji yesterday, my heart was very sad. Dreaming of a Khalsa state is not a crime, it is a matter of pride. Countless Sikhs have laid down their lives for this dream, and we cannot even dream of backing down from this sacred path. I have said many times while speaking from the stage that if I had to choose between Panth and family, I would always choose Panth.”

Amritpal Singh took oath as a Member of Parliament on July 5, under heavy security in the Parliament complex.
