After a gap of nearly four years, Star Air is set to relaunch flights from Adampur civil airport near here from March 2. The first flight will take off for Hindon after a virtual launch of the same by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The relaunch of the flight was much awaited by NRIs and business community of the Doaba region. Owing to the issue of frequent jams and highway blockades in Punjab by farmers or other agitating communities, there had been a growing demand for the relaunch of flights from Adampur. Since Adampur had been covered under Udan, a regional connectivity scheme of the government, those booking the tickets well in advance can expect a lower airfare.
The facility of civil airport had been started in 2018 at Adampur when Spicejet had started flights to Delhi. The scheme had then been extended with Mumbai and Jaipur getting added. The service was stopped in 2020 during Covid pandemic and it did not resume since then.
In 2019, the work to start a new terminal at Adampur began at a cost of Rs 115 crore. It can now accommodate over 300 passengers and has a parking provision for 150 cars. A 300-m taxi track too has been readied in the past two years. Even the road to Adampur airport from the T-junction on Jalandhar-Hoshiarpur road is being made four-lane for the convenience of the prospective flyers.
