Action begins against erring transporters

The Transport Department has finally started acting against the private transporters who have illegally extended their routes in violation of the Punjab Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

After being pulled up by the State Transport Commissioner (STC), the regional transport authorities (RTAs) at Patiala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur and Bathinda have started issuing notices to the defaulting transporters.

Citing the Punjab and Haryana High Court orders, the STC had sought action taken reports from the RTAs last week.

Sources in the department said issuing notices to the transporters before cancelling the illegally extended permits was mandatory under the law.
