The Punjab government has announced regulations for the sale and use of firecrackers during the upcoming festive season, including Diwali, Gurpurab, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve.

According to the guidelines, firecrackers can be burst for limited periods: Diwali (October 31) from 8-10 pm, Gurpurab (November 15) from 4-5 am and 9-10 pm, and Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve from 11.55 pm-12.30 am.

The regulations aim to minimise the adverse impact of firecrackers on respiratory health, particularly for vulnerable groups. The Punjab government cited orders from the Supreme Court of India and the National Green Tribunal in implementing these measures.

A statewide ban has been imposed on the manufacture, sale, and use of joined firecrackers, while only “green crackers” free from harmful chemicals are permitted. Sales are restricted to licensed traders, and e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon are prohibited from online sales within Punjab.

Deputy Commissioners will conduct public awareness campaigns highlighting the harmful effects of firecrackers, while law enforcement agencies will ensure compliance with the designated times and locations.

The regulations are enforced under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, to protect public health and the environment. The Punjab government spokesperson emphasised the importance of adhering to these guidelines to ensure a safe and healthy festive season.
