Family members of Boxer Hemant Sangwan (18) are jubilant over his gold medal winning performance in the under-19 World Championships in the US on Sunday. They will give Hemant a warm welcome on returning home at Ram Nagar locality on Tuesday.

Interestingly, Hemant’s mother Sunita Rani, who is a Sub-Inspector with the Haryana Police, will prepare Hemant’s favourite ‘Churma’ made with Desi ghee to take it to the IG airport in Delhi to serve him as a welcome dish. Hemant’s father Vinod Sangwan too is a Sub-Inspector with the CID.

“Before leaving for the US last month, my son had promised us that he would return home with a gold medal and he fulfilled his promise. I talked to Hemant over the phone and he said that he had fulfilled his promise of winning a gold medal,” Sunita Sangwan told ‘The Tribune’ here on Monday.

She said Hemant not only made her and other family members proud but also brought laurels to the state as well as the nation.

“Churma is Hemant’s favourite dish so before returning home from the event, he always asks me to prepare churma. This time too, he spoke to me and told me to make Churma for him. I will prepare it before leaving for Delhi airport to receive him there on Tuesday. We are eagerly waiting for his arrival at home,” said Sunita, adding that his next target is to clinch an Olympics medal.

She said Hemant had been participating in international tournaments for the past two years and could not win a medal only once whereas he clinched medals in Asian Championship, World Cup and other tournaments. Hemant was also a national champion, he added.

Originally hailing from Kheri Boora village of Charkhi Dadri, Hemant's family was residing in Jhajjar for the past over two decades. He has learnt the basics of boxing from a local academy.

Vinod, proud father, said Hemant did not know much about boxing but he was passionate towards the game since his childhood. “Hemant took to boxing at school. He toiled hard to achieve success. We are quite confident that Hemant will also fulfil his dream of winning a medal in the Olympics,” he added.
