Proposal to rename Mandi Dabwali sent to govt
Residents of Mandi Dabwali are urging the government to drop the prefix "Mandi" from the town's name, aligning it with its growing prominence as Haryana's largest sub-division. The proposal was initiated by Iqbal Singh Shant, son of freedom fighter Sardar Gurdev Singh Shant, who has written to the Central and state governments seeking the change.
Iqbal Singh highlighted that Mandi Dabwali, now designated as a "police district," was widely recognised simply as "Dabwali" in government records, legislative references, and national media. For instance, the Assembly constituency, police station, and official signage all refer to the town as "Dabwali."
In his letter, Iqbal noted that only a few entities, such as the railway station, municipal council, and civil hospital, still retain the "Mandi" prefix, which feels outdated and inappropriate for the rapidly developing town.
The change, he argued, would face no significant legal hurdles and would incur minimal costs, as the town was already widely known as Dabwali. He emphasised that the minor correction would reflect the aspirations of the people and the town's growing stature.
The residents support the proposal, seeing it as a step towards modernising the town's identity while honouring its legacy.
