President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday night signed a notification revoking President’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir, paving the way for the formation of a new government in the UT.

President’s rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir on October 31, 2019, after the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, divesting it of the special status.

The notification from President Murmu said, “In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 73 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 (34 of 2019) read with Articles 239 and 239A of the Constitution, the order issued on October 31, 2019, in relation to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir shall stand revoked immediately before the appointment of the Chief Minister under Section 54 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.”

This comes ahead of oath-taking of J&K CM-designate Omar Abdullah of the National Conference, who has staked claim to form government. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had recommended the revocation of the Central rule. The NC won 42 seats in the 90-member Assembly while its alliance partners Congress and CPM won six and one seat, respectively. Some Independent candidates and the lone AAP MLA have also extended support to the NC, taking its tally far beyond the majority mark.
