President Murmu turns 66, gives ‘sensitivity to PwD’ message
New Delhi, June 20
As she turned 66 on Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu delivered a strong message on the need to be sensitive to specially-abled people and said national progress was measured by the level of sensitivity and support shown to persons with disabilities (PwD).
The President on her birthday visited Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities where she spent time with specially abled children and students and witnessed a cultural performance by them.
Murmu also visited the renovated Prosthesis and Orthosis Centre and interacted with the patients.
“The progress of a country or society can be measured by the sensitivity shown by the people of that country or society towards the Divyangjan. Sensitivity and inclusivity have been integral parts of our culture and civilisation,” said Murmu, who was greeted on her birthday by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all ministers.
The President said no physical condition can be a barrier to living a normal life when national efforts are inclusive of and sensitive to the needs of Divyanjan.
”I am happy to see Divyang people scaling new heights in every field with their skills and talent,” Murmu said citing examples of sportspersons Deepa Malik, Arunima Sinha and Avani Lekhara and social workers like KS Rajanna and said that all of them are fine examples of the fact that with dedication and determination, one can overcome any physical limitation.
The President hailed Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities for working for the empowerment of persons with disabilities for the last several decades.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi posted birthday greetings for the President on his X handle.
