In a major crackdown against eve-teasing, the Jalandhar Police, led by Commissioner of Police (CP) Swapan Sharma, has intensified its efforts, issuing 284 challans, impounding 80 vehicles and taking eight preventive actions over the past three months. The police initiative, in line with the mandate from Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, aims to combat the growing problem of harassment in public space.

Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma said over 150 check-points were set up across the city in these three months to address the issue. These check-points were strategically placed near schools, colleges and other crowded areas where instances of eve-teasing had been reported. The police also responded to at least 28 complaints made via the 112 helpline number, taking swift action against offenders.

Sharma said most incidents occurred between 7 pm and 9 pm, though the city being a hub for educational institutions, also sees cases during school and college breaks, typically from 1 pm to 4 pm.

“We've devised a strategy like never before to combat the issue,” he said, while adding that special teams had been formed to patrol and monitor the key areas around educational institutions and busy public spaces.

“The Jalandhar Police have adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards eve-teasing, with violators facing a strict penalty,” he said. The CP urged the public to report incidents using the helpline numbers 112, 1091 and 1098 to ensure immediate police response.

“Apart from this, to enhance public safety, the police presence has been ramped up across the city, with CCTV cameras being installed in the key areas. Regular patrols, along with Emergency Response System (ERS) vehicles stationed near schools during the day and in the busy areas at night, is part of the broader action plan,” the CP said, while adding that community programmes were being organised in schools and colleges to raise awareness about gender sensitivity and harassment.

The initiative has been well-received by the public, with several women coming forward to share their concerns and express support for the efforts of the police. Priya Sharma, a local teacher, praised the initiative, noting that women often face harassment in public spaces and emphasised the need for stricter measures. — TNS
