Poet’s debut ghazal collection released

Ajay Tanveer’s debut collection of ghazals, Fatavian De Daur Vich (In the era of Fatwas), was launched today in a literary event at Guru Nanak Dev University. The book was presented by publisher-editor Satish Gulati, founder of Chetan Prakashan, who lauded its remarkable verses, each standing alone as a complete expression. The collection, said Gulati, held significance beyond literature, as it symbolised the enduring connection between Punjabis living abroad and their native language.

Ajay Tanveer, who is currently based in USA, is widely acknowledged for his contribution to Punjabi literature through his unique translation work. Most poets and critics believe that the genre of ghazal, with its deep-rooted history in eastern music and poetry, continues to captivate the audience, from the classical works of Mir Taqi Mir and Ghalib to the modern-day artistry of poets like Tanveer.

To strengthen this cultural bond, Satish Gulati announced plans to hold eight major book fairs across various cities in the USA next month. These book fairs aim to promote Punjabi literature, both classical and contemporary, among diaspora communities, making it more accessible and helping to preserve the Punjabi literary tradition.

“The enthusiasm for Tanveer’s work among American Punjabi communities is evident, reflecting deep connection to their heritage. His ghazals are celebrated not only for their literary brilliance but also for addressing contemporary issues,” said poet Vishal, who describes Tanveer as “a poet of our times”, capturing the voices of those advocating for their rights.
