Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the significance of recognising Pali as a classical language during the International Abhidhamma Divas event on Thursday and said that this recognition honours India’s rich cultural legacy, particularly that of Lord Buddha.

PM Modi criticised past governments for neglecting India’s cultural heritage post-Independence, saying, “While every nation associates its heritage with its identity, India was left far behind.”

He pointed out that both historical invaders and those with a “slave mindset” contributed to erasing India’s identity.

“The world plagued by instability and insecurity can find solutions in the teachings of Lord Buddha,” he said, adding that peace should be sought not through “yuddh” (war) but Buddha’s teachings.

Highlighting the importance of Pali, Modi said, “It is everyone’s responsibility to preserve the language, which is no longer in common usage.” He also noted that the recognition of Pali and Marathi as classical languages reflects India’s transformation towards self-respect and confidence.
