Plant sale counters now at four places in Paonta Sahib

In an effort to promote environmental sustainability and increase greenery, the Forest Division of Paonta Sahib has announced the expansion of its Van Mahotsav plant sale initiative. In addition to the three existing nurseries in Puruwala, Tokiyon, and Girinagar, plant sale counters are now available at all four Forest Range offices and the division office in Paonta Sahib. The strategic move aims to make it more convenient for residents to obtain a variety of native plants.
The nurseries now offer over 50 species of native plants, including endemic species such as Sandan, Khajoor, and Tatpatanga. The initiative encourages residents to plant these species near their households and on private lands, contributing to increased green cover and the concept of ‘Trees Outside Forests.’ The initiative aligns with broader environmental goals, aiming to enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change, and improve air quality.
“We urge citizens to not only plant these trees on private lands but also join us in plantation drives within forest areas,” said Aishwarya Raj, Divisional Forest Officer of Paonta Sahib. “Our goal is to foster a community-driven approach to reforestation and environmental conservation.”
To ensure the success and sustainability of these efforts, the department requires buyers to fill out a proforma, detailing the location where saplings will be planted. This allows field staff to monitor the progress and health of the plantations, ensuring that the trees thrive and contribute effectively to the environment.
In addition to the plant sale, the Forest Division is promoting the Van Mahotsav Pratiyogita, a competition aimed at rewarding the best plantation and after-care maintenance efforts by groups and citizens. Winners will be recognised during next monsoon season with appreciation certificates and cash incentives. “This competition is our way of acknowledging and incentivising the hardwork and dedication of those contributing to our green cover,” added Raj.
