Water supply workers protest delay in wages
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 24
The residents of Sirhind and Fatehgarh Sahib had to go without water supply during the current hot and humid weather on account of the strike by the water supply and sanitation workers in support of their demands. The sanitation department employees and water supply pump operators today protested in front of the Municipal Council, Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib and raised slogans against the government and in support of their demands.
Addressing the mediapersons, Praveen Kumar, president of the Municipal Council Safai Karmchari Union, said that sanitation workers and pump operators have been working on contract for more than 20 years. Many of their legitimate demands have not been met. He said that the workers are working on contract under a private company and the honorarium given to them is very low and they are not getting being paid as per the rules. Not only this, they also don’t get their salary on time, which causes hardships in day to day life. He said that the salary for the month of June has not been received.
Sukhpal Singh, SDO Water Supply and Sanitation he said that the concerned company has been asked to pay the employees and the company. Apart from this, the matter regarding their other demands is being brought to the notice of the higher authorities for early resolution.
