Fatehgarh Sahib, July 31
Rich tributes were paid to Udham Singh on his martyrdom day at his memorial situated at Rauza Sharif in Fatehgarh Sahib today. The people from various walks of life led by Fatehgarh Sahib MLA Lakhbir Singh Rai and Deputy Commissioner Parneet Shergill paid their obeisance and observed two minutes of silence.
Addressing the gathering, DC Parneet Shergill said that all those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of the nation are always remembered and become immortal and source of inspiration for the coming generations. The communities, which forget and don’t respect their martyrs, cannot make any progress and their future is not safe. She said that Udham Singh sacrificed his life not for a religion or caste but to avenge the Jalianwala Bagh massacre, making every Indian proud. She said that it becomes our moral responsibility that we should work to strengthen the unity and integrity of the country.
MLA Lakhbir Rai said that the nation can hardly pay the debt of such martyrs and it is due to their sacrifices that we are enjoying freedom. He said that we should take a pledge on this day to wage a war against social evils like drug abuse, female foeticide, dowry, corruption, adulteration and pollution, so that we may construct a healthy society which our martyrs dreamed of. It would be true tribute to Udham Singh, he added.
On this occasion, Fatehgarh Sahib SDM Ishmit Vijay Singh, Roza Sharif Khalifa Syed Sadiq Raza, councillors and other political leaders paid tributes to the martyr.
