Speaker opens 36th International Punjabi conference at Patiala university

Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Tuesday inaugurated the 36th International Punjabi Vikas Conference at Punjabi University, Patiala, emphasising that Punjabiat was rooted in large-heartedness and was a symbol of unity,

not division.

Sandhwan highlighted the global reach of the Punjabi language and culture, asserting that it was our collective responsibility to preserve and promote its rich legacy and historical significance. “Punjabi culture is one of the most ancient and remarkable cultures in the world, and we should all feel proud of it,” he said, underscoring the importance of keeping the history of Punjabiat alive in the annals of time.

The three-day conference, themed “Punjabi Society’s Historic Tradition: Contemporary Relevance,” will explore the enduring strength of Punjabi unity, which has withstood efforts to divide it in the past. Sandhwan stressed that despite the challenges, Punjabiat remained resilient, magnificent, and extraordinary. He also touched upon the cultural ties with Pakistani Punjabis, calling Punjabiat a transcendent culture that rises above narrow divides.

A student delegation also met with Sandhwan, urging him to press the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to appoint a full-time vice-chancellor at Punjabi University, a position that has been vacant for some time.
