Farmers protest outside the BJP district president’s residence.
Fatehgarh Sahib, February 20
Farmers belonging to the district unit of the SKM today organised a protest in front of the house of the district president of the BJP, Didar Singh Bhatti, and raised slogans against the Central Government.
Addressing the farmers, district president of BKU (Rajewal), Bhupinder Singh Jallah, said as per the call of the United Farmers Front, the union is organising dharnas in front of the houses of BJP leaders across Punjab from February 20 to 22, due to the Central Government’s anti-farmer policies. He said the government had persisently been ignoring the demands of the farmers. He said the farmers want the Central Government to put into effect the demands it had conceded over two years ago.
Jallah said farmers want to go to Delhi to hold a peaceful protest, but the Haryana Government has sealed the borders and started firing rubber bullets and tear gas on the protesters.
“We are certainly not going to tolerate this,” said Jallah.
Indian Farmers Association backs protests
In a meeting today, the Indian Farmers Association announced their support for the protesting farmers and talked about the ‘atrocities’ that the Haryana Government is committing against the peacefully protesting farmers.
Addressing mediapersons, the national president of the association said the association supports the cause of the protesting farmers and would join the agitation, adding that its members would make all efforts possible to unite all the farmers at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders against the “unjust rule” of the Central Government.
He added that the PM had forgotten the promises he made to the farmers after the previous agitation over two years ago, adding that if the demands were not met by the Central and state governments, the farmers would intensify the protest. He also asked the Haryana Government to open the borders so that the farmers could peacefully go to Delhi.
