Municipal Corporation Commissioner Rajat Oberoi conducted an unannounced inspection in various neighborhoods, including Gurbax Colony, Guru Nanak Colony, Harinder Nagar, Gobind Bagh, Majithia Enclave, and other areas after receiving complaints about non-functional streetlights. These outages, residents reported, have posed security threats and inconvenienced pedestrians and commuters.

During his visit, Oberoi noted a significant number of streetlights that were not operational. Following which, he instructed the department’s junior engineer to urgently repair these and provide photo evidence of the restored lighting.

Vikas Garg, a resident, shared that the issue of non-functional streetlights had been persisting for over two months, despite continuous complaints. The situation was recently raised at the ‘Aap Di Sarkar Tohadey Dwar’ programme, attended by Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh and MLA Ajitpal Singh Kohli, who assured residents that the matter would be addressed.

A resident delegation had also met the Commissioner to request an on-ground inspection of the problem. “The absence of streetlights has allowed anti-social activities to rise,” another resident remarked. “Women feel unsafe walking at night due to the increased snatching incidents and other forms of harassment, as offenders often take advantage of the darkness to evade capture.”

Oberoi assured residents that the issue would be treated on priority, with repairs expected in the coming days to restore safety and security in these neighbourhoods.
