Chandigarh, July 17

The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) today has taken suo motu cognisance of a news item — “After Patran, diarrhoea outbreak in Patiala; 1 dead, 31 cases detected” — published in these columns. The Chief Medical Officer of Patiala has been asked to submit a report on diarrhoea outbreak by October 4 — the next date of hearing in this matter.

Chairperson Justice Sant Parkash asserted that the PSHRC had perused the news item, indicating diarrhoea outbreak in Patiala city, with Udham Singh Nagar reporting 31 such cases and a death.

“It is also indicated in the news that 50 cases of diarrhoea were recorded in Patran as well. The commission takes suo motu cognisance of the matter and calls for a report from the Chief Medical Officer, Patiala,” directed Justice Parkash.
