A research conducted at Government Medical College, Patiala, revealed that 78 (52%) out of 150 first-year MBBS students experienced poor sleep quality. The study identified significant links between poor sleep and patterns of smartphone usage, such as screen time exceeding two hours per day and using smartphones in the dark before bedtime.

The details came to light during the Continuing Medical Education (CME) session on sleep health, organised by the department of physiology at Government Medical College here. The experts suggested that sleep labs should be established in the hospitals for the doctors so that they could recharge their body and mind. The medical college has no such sleep lab for students and doctors.
