Farmers honoured for not burning stubble
The district has recorded 75 per cent reduction in stubble burning cases compared to last year, an environmental engineer of the Punjab Pollution Control Board has said. Only 195 cases have been reported till date, compared to 800 incidents of stubble burning in the district last year.
The campaign launched by the district administration had yielded good results and it will be continued, Deputy Commissioner Sona Thind said while addressing the media along with Kamal Singla, environmental engineer, PPCB.
They were present at function organised by the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, in collaboration with PPCB, to honour 118 farmers who did not burn stubble, here today.
The DC said they were proud of the farmers of the district who played an important role in saving environment and others should also take inspiration from them. She said another extremely sensitive issue was that of depleting groundwater level in five blocks of the district.
“We will have to think seriously about it from now on because it is impossible to live without water,” the DC added.
