Former banker Deepak Kampani has been elected president of the prestigious Rajindra Gymkhana and Mahendra Club (RGMC), following the declaration of the election results, here today.

The elections were held at the RGMC, one of the oldest clubs, yesterday and the results were declared this morning.

Deepak Kampani, who promised overall development of the club and assured the voters he would “add more sports facilities and improve the quality of the food at the club’s food joints” was declared the winner. “I am thankful to the voters and also to everyone who participated in the electoral process,” he stated, adding that “I will execute my agenda and work for the betterment of the club.”

Vikas Puri was elected vice-president; eye specialist Dr Sukhdip Singh Boparai was elected honorary secretary, Vinod Sharma was made joint secretary and Sanchit Bansal was elected the treasurer of the club

Voting for the seven posts of the executive committee, were also held on Saturday. Dr Nidhi Bansal became the lone woman candidate entering the committee with the others members being Rahul Mehta, Anshuman Kharbanda, Pardeep Kumar Singla, Jatin Goyal, Bikramjit Singh and Avinash Gupta.

There are five posts of office-bearers and seven of executive members for which around 1,745 of the total around 2,800 members of the club voted. “The elections were carried out democratically and peacefully. A new team has been formed and we will continue to improve and add more to the club facilities,” said Dr Boparai.

One of the keenly contested polls in Patiala, the club has members from across the state and the country. It is also affiliated with many other clubs in the country.
