With promises of flawless civic infrastructure falling flat ahead of municipal elections, residents of Ajit Nagar have taken matters into their own hands. They have launched a community-driven effort to repair broken roads in the area and are self-funding the project.

Frustration among residents has been mounting as roads in Ajit Nagar and the nearby Hira Colony, Brar Street have remained in a deplorable state for over a year. The roads were dug up as part of a canal-based drinking water supply project but were never properly restored, leaving behind dusty, uneven, and hazardous routes.

Looking to bring relief to daily commuters, residents of Ajit Nagar have created a WhatsApp group to coordinate the fundraising initiative. The message circulated in the group reads: “As all of you are aware, roads dug up by the authorities for laying water pipelines were never repaired by civic authorities.”

Each household has been urged to contribute Rs 3,000 toward making the roads safe and commuter-friendly.

Pankaj Mohindru, a resident of Ajit Nagar, voiced his frustration, saying, “We have repeatedly appealed to the authorities, but all our pleas for even modest civic infrastructure have fallen on deaf ears. We finally decided to pool our resources to construct a stretch decent enough for commuting.”

Other residents have also expressed anger at the local administration’s failure to address the problem despite numerous complaints.

There were also calls to boycott the elections. Political parties, on the other hand, went full throttle during the campaign, promising resolution of the civic issues.
